Deane was born May 4, 1978 to James and Annie M. (Bosworth) Deane. He graduated from Yale University, A.B., 1902; Ph. D., 1914 in classics. From 1909 to 1912 he was assistant curator of classical art and secretary to the director at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. From 1912 to his death he taught classics at Smith College.
